And before I start, I’m trying to apply to places with higher pay. This is just mind boggling to me.
Before the pandemic, we had a weekly schedule of what time we work, as well as the time we clock in and clock out. You know, the standard that every wage-paying job should have. I would consistently work 5 days a week, right after school. This helped me create schedules for myself to plan.
Flash forward to the pandemic, and my job has been out of their mind. We no longer do a week long schedule, but rather get texted when we work…. The night before. Yup, receiving texts from the manager at 8pm that you have to go back in 12 hours. Now your whole Wednesday plan is pushed aside because your job decided they needed you tomorrow. They always try to hit me up with “I’ll tell you later today if we need you tomorrow” so my whole schedule has to revolve around seeing if I have work or not. My girlfriend needs my help to get somewhere tomorrow? Sorry babe I don’t know if I work tomorrow or not but I’ll tell you by 9 if I can take you.
I told them I’m in college to study but they persistently ask me if I would like to come in and “make some hours” on days I have off and it bothers the living hell out of me. Even on days when they say I’ll be there for only “two hours” they end up asking for so much I finish the day on a regular 8 hour shift and I’m too exhausted to do anything else.
The final straw was when they forgot to text me the night before (so I assumed I just didn’t work that day) but they finally texted me, but at 5am… that I worked at 8:30am. I told them I had other plans (since they didn’t tell me anything) and the first reply from them was “but you always work this day of the week and we really need you.” Also that they don’t tell you what time you get off until you finish everything they need you to do. So you could be getting off at 2pm. Could be 3pm. Could be in two hours.
