Some background information for the situation:
I graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Geological Engineering and a Minor in Geology in 2017. Since graduating, I have been working as an Environmental Engineer for the state government, meaning I have done a lot of regulatory review and compliance assessments, but not much hands on work or field work.
I have recently been searching for a new Job closer to my family, and about two months ago I interviewed at a consulting company for an Entry Level Geological Engineering position. I felt like the interview went very well and felt as though I got along well with the head of the branch that was doing the hiring, but I was ultimately passed up for on the position for someone that had more experience.
Earlier this week I was contacted by the head of the branch that I interviewed at two months ago. He wanted to know if I was still searching for a job and if I would be interested in interviewing for a position that had just opened up at the same location, and told me to apply.
However, the new position is an Entry Level Geologist/Hydrogeologist. The main issue is that I don’t meet the requirement for the job (Degree in Geology/Hydrogeology, ability to obtain PG, experience with some Groundwater Flow modeling software, etc.). Typically, I wouldn’t even apply to jobs like this, but I did due to the head of the branch reaching out to me with the position.
I currently have an interview set up for a phone interview tomorrow with the company, and I’m not sure how I should handle the situation. I don’t know if I should just state right out of the gate that I don’t have the qualifications that they are looking for, but that I am willing to learn or what.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
