Does an unpaid internship count as 'employment'? Should I check that box when applying to the company? I'm nervous about it.

Hello, I'm currently working on a project for a company that counts as my senior project in college. It is unpaid, but I do have a company email. The recruiter specifically said "unpaid internship" so that's what I listed on my resume.

 

My question specifically is if I check the box that "I am a current or previous employee" when applying for full time jobs with this company. I can see it either way, as a project through the school for the company or I could see it as counting as employment (not just experience, employment) because I'm an intern. For clarity, I have no problem listing intern on my resume and everything because that's what I am, just the term employment specifically when asked on the application.
