Hi everyone, this is a super pre-emptive post, but it’s a situation I really want to be ready for if it does happen. I’ve done final round interviews for two different companies in my field. One (company A) has been a super long, drawn out process in applying and interviewing, but I should be hearing back soon. The other (company B) has been very fast because my supervisor at the company I’m interning at recommended me to another company for a job, and they’ve been calling my references and my supervisor feels confident for me. I would prefer the position at company A because I have some health issues that I think would be better suited to that one. I’m now stressing that I might hear back with an offer from company B, because the whole process has only taken three weeks and they seem to want to get cracking, and that I’ll hear from them before I hear from company A because they take forever to do everything (I was actually supposed to hear from them last week but no dice so far). I’d like to know whether I have the one I would prefer, but I don’t think I’ll hear from them first.
What would be the best course of action here, assuming I hear from company B before I hear from the other? Should I concoct a polite but awkward request for a few days’ time to decide before accepting and then contact company A? Or accept the company B job, and then if I get the job from company A, accept that and back out on company B (but if it’s a negative from company A then nothing needs to be backed out on)? I don’t want to seem unappreciative of any job offers at all, but I also don’t want to burn any bridges with any companies, especially since my supervisor put in a good word for me. Sorry this feels like a silly thing to be worrying about but I would really like to be able to do the best thing with the least damage!
