How to get out of a pigeonholed career?

I am in a niche engineering field in the public sector and though I have grown in my career, I am just getting weary about the future prospects. Our department is rife with politics, cliques, gossip and mobbing. I am not able to play these games and want out and I am searching hard. The problem is that I have 15 years experience in a niche engineering area and switching is hard.

Any suggestions?
