So does "Not a protected veteran" mean you were never a veteran to begin with??

Alright, so I'm pretty sure I have effectively soiled every job application I have posted due to this.

On job applications, when it says "veteran status", there are three options: protected veteran, not a protected veteran, and I do not wish to answer.

........I have been selecting "I am not a protected veteran" for all my job applications, and I'm pretty sure that is not technically right because I was never a veteran to begin with..(?)....right? Yikes, I never thought I was this much of a moron....
