Asking an employee to come back

Here's what happened:

Boss yells at employee, and says things that way are out of line. Cursing, personal attacks, the whole 9 yards. The employee then quits without notice, and without so much as discussing the matter at all, they just walk out.

If you were the manager in this situation and you wanted the employee to come back, how would you handle this?

Would you say that since the employee left by choice, the ball is now in their court if they want to come back, and there is nothing that can be done? Would asking the employee to come back - when they are the ones who made the choice to leave - look desperate (if the employee wanted to be there, they could have just not quit)?
