Resigned recently, employer asked me to help transition for a few months before I leave. Not sure if I want to continue in this field, but still hitting the job search early just in case I do.
I'm a lawyer, and I was there when the firm was founded a while ago. I've done a lot of work for the firm and I respect and admire the firm owner through and through.
But for a few health-related reasons that I won't go too much into, I don't feel like I can stay at this firm. I told them recently that I was giving notice and would resign after the usual two weeks. They told me I was really valuable and asked for me to stay a few months to help transition. The firm owner even came to my office and shook my hand and said "We wish you good luck - always."
I'm planning to work decently hard for the last couple of months (but I can't go flat-out and risk my health). Part of my health reasons were caused by me working nearly-12-hour-days in recent months. I can't really do that to myself anymore.
My goals:
- manage the transition and departure amicably if possible. I've worked with this firm for more than 5 years and I'm one of the top three employees here. There is some resentment at the fact that I'm leaving them - they have treated me well, financially.
- find out what the job market is like. Continue applying for next job placement on weekends when I'm not at work.
- potentially change location.
- heal. I need to eat, meditate, and do exercise properly, so the burden of the past years of heavy work can be shed.
- figure out if I actually want to continue being a lawyer. Or if I'd be better off going "Office Space" and doing home renovations or something.
- I've also heard that technical writing and copy writing can be a rewarding job. I've been writing professionally for the past 18 years - long before I became a lawyer.
Who else has left a well-paying but terribly stressful job? And how did you land?
