I started working a job about 3 months ago.
When I interviewed, they gave me a sheet with standard hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
I assumed those would be the standard hours. I went in everyday on time and left around 5:05 p.m. daily, the first two months.
Last week, my boss had a chat with me about how she expected me to be working around 70 hours a week.
I was in shock. Although I am salaried, working 70 hours per week would mean my hourly wage would be $13.50. That's not why I went to university and grad school for.
Plus, I value my free time afterwork exercising and doing activities time with my family. I'm also involved in my religious organization. In my two years of working, I've always left at 5:00 p.m. I consider any time worked after 5:00 p.m. to be working for free.
Well, I continued the 8:30 to 5:00 p.m. for about a week after the talk with my boss; I was still thinking of what to do (quitting, etc.).
Well, boss beat me to the punch today . Boss and to my office and told me that "it wasn't a good fit" and she was letting me. A security was waiting outside who escorted me out.
There were no complaints about my work. I got good reviews. I never got any warnings or reprimanded. The talk about working 70 hours was the only dissatisfaction communicated to me.
I still can't believe this. I live in the U.S., btw.
