Post-College Job Search and Realistic Expectations

Howdy Y'all,

I was hoping to vent for a bit and get some feedback as far as what realistic expectations for a job search should be. Just to put it out there, I'm posting with my girlfriend, who the topic of this post is. She just recently graduated from a great school in the south after 5 years working towards a bachelor's degree in animal science. As far as experience goes, she had been working at a local clinic during the summer/spring/winter breaks when she was back from school. After being promised a full-time job upon graduation, she was a told a few days before her start date that they could no longer bring her onboard. Honestly, I think I was a lot more pissed off about that than she was.

Since then, she's been hardcore into the job search, applying to some 70+ jobs in the month and change or so since the news about her old job. Although she'd ideally like to be back at an animal clinic, she's applied to a range of animal care, conservation, and administration roles.

Honestly, it sucks. She's gotten 5 replies to all of those applications, 2 of those actually following up on those for interviews. I feel like we've been doing everything we can as far as the job search goes. She's updated her resume out the wazoo, developed and flaunted her linkedin, and made herself available on a ton of job sites. Despite this, I feel like a lot of these efforts are coming up dry.

The main thing I could see possible employers turning her away for is her requested salary of ~$15/hr, or up towards $30,000 a year. I don't think that sounds incredibly out of reach, especially for a 4 year grad, but I'm more than willing to get feedback on that. On the more personal side, it's been an incredibly stressful experience. She just wants to get out of the house and into a productive, professional routine.

What's worked for y'all as far as job search depression goes? What else is out there to expect for the search? Does she just have to keep applying to everything under the sun for a long period of time before something shakes out? Does she have to lower her expectations on the type of job and what salary comes with that? What is good to do in the meantime while she keeps applying to jobs - I've heard part time jobs are a possibility, as well as volunteering. Is there anything else we should know about the job search and how can we make the most out of a really tough time?

I know that's a wall of text and a lot of random questions but if anyone out there could provide some insight or give constructive feedback, that would be much appreciated. Thanks so much in advance for y'alls help, I really look forward to it.
