Does distance matter?

Hey all, does anybody know if distance is counted against you when applying for jobs?

I live in the outskirts of my nearest major city (an hour away) because it's what I can afford. Unfortunately the majority of local jobs are warehouse so the majority of my applications are in that hour-away major city. I'm wondering if I should be using a friend's address instead. Would saying I'm willing to relocate, if prompted, help?
