Company wants to fly me out while I'm on a road trip, then fails to send me any travel details, thoroughly inconveniencing me.

Hi all,

I recently graduated university. Applied to a few select jobs in April, then decided to go on a cross country (relatively off-the-grid) road trip. This is a 2 month endeavour.

A week or so into my trip, one of the companies gets in touch. I let them know my situation (that I'm constantly on the move and not peacefully at home), and we work around it for 2 phone interviews (Recruiter, then Technical Lead). Technical Lead and I get along great, and they say they want to fly me out for a panel interview with ~10 people. Recruiter gets on it, and we agree on a date 12 days into the future; substantial time to organise. I remind them that I'm on the road, and we agree on an airport for me to fly out from. Keep in mind that I'm going out of my way to go to this city/airport, it isn't part of my travel plans.

It is currently Saturday, interview's on Monday. I have not received ticket details or itinerary. Recruiter's last communication was 3 days ago, where they asked some details about my passport. I attempted to call Recruiter this morning, but seems they don't work weekends. So basically, I have no travel details, and have no idea if I should bother staying at this city/airport.

I'm in the middle of travelling. I'm not in the mood to keep myself on ice waiting for them to get their act together. I would like to get on the road, and if they recontact me, tell them to schedule a flight from a different airport.

Additionally, this recruiter has done this once with me before. They ghosted my initial phone screen with no warning, apologized later and rescheduled. As it was over the phone, it didn't inconvenience me too much, but it tells me something about the recruiter.

Overall, I believe I would still like to work with this company. It's a high powered startup. I like the department's ethos, and the technical people I've spoken to over the phone. I don't want to set it ablaze because of a recruiter's lack of consideration.

Questions:

  1. What is the professional way to handle this without being a complete pushover? The fact that this is the second inconsiderate event in the recruitment process makes me want to put my foot down.
  2. What does this say about company ethos vs just the recruiter's ethos?
  3. Is it a bad idea to just keep travelling, and tell them to reorganize from a different airport if they really want to interview me?
  4. Though this is entirely the recruiters fault, will the technical interviewing panel be turned off me if I don't play nice?

Thanks for the help!
