Okay so for context I’m a university student set to enter my second year and I applied for a camp counsellor position as a summer job.
I went through the first couple rounds of interviews and the final one is a video interview/orientation tomorrow afternoon which is where we iron out final details (like pay) and I accept or decline the offer. I had an interview yesterday and was informed that the pay rate was starting @ $440-$460/two weeks (the camp will run Jul 9-Aug 30). I am very much qualified for the position (as they know) and they said it will go up according to your qualifications, but they didn’t give any specifics and I doubt it will go up enough to even match minimum wage. I kind of froze up and didn’t question it during yesterday’s interview because I didn’t want to seem rude but this doesn’t measure up to even MINIMUM WAGE in my province which is $11.35 CAD/hour.
So for comparison, gross earnings at minimum wage for one week:
11.35x8hrs per day= 90.8x5 per day x 5 days per week = gross $454 CAD per WEEK is minimum wage working a normal 40 hour week.
This is @ minimum wage and working only 8 hr/day vs at this camp we are on duty 24/7 (obviously no OT, it is not hourly) and the system is 9 days working, 2 days off making only $440-$460 CAD/two weeks. If I worked minimum wage full time instead I’d make double this amount at my 2 jobs, and I have the opportunity to do so but I would really like this experience for my resume!
They also provide room and board as it is an hour away from the city and I understand that must factor into the low pay but they are run by a corporate-run charity that doesn’t charge campers to attend so it seems strange that that should factor in so heavily.
Is this normal for camp counsellor pay? How would I go about questioning/negotiating the pay during my interview tomorrow? The turnover is quick as I would be starting July 9th and would have to inform my other places of work so I’m really stressed about it as I have to accept or decline on the spot. I’ve never negotiated pay before.
