Hi all, so I am going back to school this coming August to study computer science. After my first degree in an unrelated field, I temped it as a chemist for 7 months. I now am a chemist at a hemp production facility, and I have been here for 4 months. As the title says, I'm wondering when I should yeet on out of here, but first I feel like there's some necessary details to understand. I really don't feel like there's a perfect answer to this question.
I'll start with the positives I guess. These people pay me pretty damn well. It's a ten minute commute. I don't completely hate all my coworkers. The CEO has a lot of money and acquiring new toys is easy.
Now for the negatives- my current company is fucking insane. Little regards for safety, compliance, or even legally sending out product. All of the production machinery is sourced from China and it doesn't even have UL-certified components. As a matter of fact, I constantly worry about getting in legal trouble just for being associated with this company (can go into a little more detail there if needed). Like, I seriously think I could get arrested if I stick around too long. My boss' management skills are nonexistent and as a result the work environment is toxic as all get-out. He has no clue what he is supposed to be doing in a chemical production environment, and one government audit would sink the whole plant. I don't even like the work I do, and my position is not how it was described to me. I find myself doing 3/4ths production supervising and 1/4th chemistry, which fucking blows. Did I mention this is the short list of complaints?
So you probably have gathered that I REALLY want to leave, and I do, but there are a few concerns I have. First of all, leaving now or in two months could be the difference in about 4000 extra dollars in student loans (and no, I don't have any loans from my first degree, so taking on a little bit won't be a huge issue. Only anticipating 20-25K total.). Secondly, I am really quite afraid that having two short stints at two workplaces will affect my internship placements down the road. I understand that 6 months wouldn't be a lot longer than 4, but longer is longer. The positives to leaving would be that I could maybe find some temporary part time work and take some time to brush up on Calc and C++.
I'm really distraught about what I should do in this situation. Really taking a toll on my mental health. Any advice?
