Lots of interviews, no job offers (hourly minimum wage jobs). Trying to analyze my interview habits so I can see what I'm doing wrong.
I've had 8 interviews this past May and June. I haven't landed a single one. I'm trying to figure out the reason I haven't been landing any of them.
My strengths:
- I'm friendly, personable, no red flags (at least any I'm aware of). Always smile and eye contact, firm handshake if they offer one. I naturally mimic the interviewer's level of formality. I only talk using positive language and never badmouth past employers.
- I dress professionally. Dress shoes, dress pants, a tucked in dress shirt and my hair tied back. I come prepared with my resume in a clear plastic folder.
- I have experience in everything I apply for.
- I have very good availability (open availability except for one day)
- I'm willing to stay until I graduate university and possibly after
- I answer using the STAR method.
- I do solid research on the company before the interview.
- I ask questions when they ask if I have any questions.
My weaknesses:
- I'm too professional during interviews and I guess I can see it coming off as cold, and not genuine. I talk as if I'm giving a presentation and I talk with my hands.
- But the moment I realized this, I tried to be more myself during the next interview, which felt right, but when the interviewer was escorting me out:
INTERVIEWER: So why did you leave your last job?
ME: Because the new school year would be starting and I had to move to the dorms, but this year I'm going to live at home.
INTERVIEWER: "You didn't like living on campus?"
ME: "Well right now I just need money."
I cringe at how I said that, but I answered properly during the actual interview when they asked "why do you want to work here?"
TL;DR of this bullet point: I felt too comfortable when I tried to be myself.
- I say "fluff" to buy time while I'm thinking. For example:
INTERVIEWER: Tell me a time you dealt a dissatisfied customer.
ME: At (past fast food job) there were a lot of times when customers would be dissatisfied, which is just the nature of working in a fast-paced, high intensity atmosphere, but we always strive to do our best to handle complaints and keep the customer happy. One example is when... (real answer)
- I do directly answer the question but I can ramble at times. Often I don't know when to stop talking so my last sentence is, "and that is how I (repeats the question)" For example:
INTERVIEWER: What does customer service mean to you?
ME: Customer service means (answer answer, ramble and answer) and that is what customer service means to me.
- I will go back to school in September BUT I tell them I plan on keeping the job until I graduate!
I'm sure there's much worse interviewees than me. It's getting frustrating, I don't know why I need career-level interviewing skills for a minimum wage job but I'm trying to do something about it. So what's the biggest issue here? And how do I work on it? If any of the strengths are actually hurting more than helping, please let me know as well.
