How do you explain substantial employment gap?

My employment gap spans years and there are various contributing factors, primarily it's due to disability but also depression, moving countries, the economy, how I lost my last full-time job, etc.

It has not been a conscious choice to avoid work.

I can sort of fudge the details by saying I moved abroad and worked there, but I still have a two year gap - I try to explain it as depression and getting back on my feet once I came back to my home country, I have volunteered for the past year, but obviously it still doesn't look great.
