Working for competing companies at the same time but different positions

I am currently working as a sub agent for a friend of mine who works at a credit card processing company.

Then I got an interview with another company that also provides credit card processing services. However, I am interviewing for a payroll position. Should I mention that I am working at another credit card processing company during the interview?

My friend who is my supervisor and the main agent of my current company says he is okay with me working at the competitor but he believes that the other company will probably know that I am working at their competitor when they conduct a background check on me.

​

It is not necessary to have both but I truly prefer to work for both of them. I need some advice.
