I quit my job 4 months ago. I am finally on the verge of getting the best job I have ever had. But the problem is I will need to provide a reference from the job I quit. I actually did leave on good terms with my boss but we were very shaky for the 3 years I was there for.
My reason for quitting was I had this partner who couldn’t do the job properly. I was not a supervisor yet I was put in the position of one as my boss wouldn’t manage him. He kept making mistakes and then always would say it wasn’t him so then I would get in trouble as well. He also smelt so bad I was throwing up outside a couple of times. It affected my mental health as it was 12 hours a day. I tried for over a year to sort it out with my boss and HR. Also I worked with chemicals and that was getting to my chest. I had just had enough in the end.
I handed my notice in and did my 2 weeks notice, I left professionally but had no job to go to. He said he would give me a reference but I don’t trust him one bit! I’m going to tell my hopefully new employers that I left because of the chemicals which isn’t a lie. I got on with everybody else and we even went for drinks outside of work sometimes. But my former boss will mention that I left because I didn’t want to work with somebody, he is a dickhead. He will say that and I won’t get the job, I can see it now. I know you are not supposed to give a bad reference but he won’t care he will 100% say that to them. He will probably say I’m a good worker as well but it doesn’t matter when he says I can’t work with other people. What should I do? Can I suggest a reference from a different manager there who will sing my praises?
