Epiphany on Interviews

So, I was tasked with managing this new internship my company is sponsoring for the summer. First time I'm ever doing something like this, but I've got things pretty nailed down.

We're in the first phase where we've scrubbed through all the resumes and have selected candidates for the first round of interviews. Since I'm the one that is managing the internship as well as managing the actual interns, I get to do all the first round interviews. I set up everything, e-mails are sent, and things are going according to plan.

About two days into the interview process, I realize something that definitely happens to me if/when I'm on the other side of the interview table: I know within the first few minutes if I'm going to say yes or no. Literally, during their well-rehearsed speech about how awesome they are, I've already made up my mind on whether or not I want them on the team.

Which really begs the question: how can you go through the interview process knowing they've already made up their mind and the rest of the interview is just a long way of saying, "Thanks, please leave"? Has anybody else who conducts interviews ever experience this before?
