I recently graduated uni with a degree in commerce and had an interview with a retail bank for a "personal banking adviser" position, pretty much a teller.
So everything went well. Online tests, interview, reference checks, police check and I receive an offer extremely fast on the 16th of May (online offer, with a deadline to accept of 29th May)
On the 17th the bank manager calls asking when am I available to start, I say 1st week of June, he agrees and says to accept the offer online. I reply with something along the lines of "I'm weighing my options at the moment as I have interviewed with some other companies and would like to hold off my decision until they get back to me".
He alludes to holding off and "parking the offer" as he "needs to move fast". I say fair enough I won't wait till the 29th or wait for all the other companies to get back to me, but that I will think about it over the weekend (Bank teller is obviously not my 1st choice, this was discussed in the interview when he asked about my career goals and where I see myself in 5+ years and also it is a 1.5 hour drive from my house, needed to think this over). He says all good, I'll wait for your call on Monday.
So Monday comes around (today), I call him at 9AM, no answer. He gets back to me 10:30AM, and pretty much says that he doesn't feel I am right for the position anymore because "I am not 100% in" and it's not my 1st choice etc. and that he will get in touch if there is anything closer to my house. I protested once to no avail and then just gave up as it had left a bad taste in my mouth.
Did I mess up, or is the bank manager at fault?
