Some context here - I'm 18 still in high school and going to college in the same city where the restaurant I got hired at is. So I got a part-time job as a table busser at this nicer restaurant near where I live just to have some money for college and such. I have orientation for it tomorrow - Thursday the 2nd. I plan on working there through college. I've been planning to do a mountaineering course in Washington for a month over the summer before college just to get a cool experience and learn some stuff. The course runs from mid-July to mid-August. I prioritize this course over my new job, but I also want to work at this restaurant because I can make a lot of money from tips. My question is how would I go about telling my employers that I plan to dip for a month over summer just after getting the job. Seems like their policy wouldn't allow it without being fired, but I really got the job because of a family friend who knows the managers. My plan right now is just to tell the manager doing my orientation tomorrow what's happening and just see what happens. Any other advice?
