New company is a mess. Stick it out or leave?

I have been with my current company for about 5 months. While I am happy with my day to day I have concerns about my future with the company.

Management is constantly changing. People (VPs, Directors, Managers) get fired and new positions get created every few weeks. The head of my department got fired and they’ve announced that they will not be filling the position. I have only spoken to the person I have been (technically) reporting to once and it was during my probationary review.

This is my first salary job making decent money. I know there is no where for me to go in the company and that I’ll need to leave in a year or 2 anyway. I had a decent job before but I was seriously underpaid for the work I was doing and did not have a title commensurate with my value. I was there for over 4 years and have great references from them. They didn’t have the budget to give me a “real job” and funding ran out for the one I had.

I then had a 4 month “gap” where I worked retail to make ends meet before starting this job.

Should I start looking for a new job now or wait until I put some real time in?
