Hi,
My coworker is great and I'm glad I have the chance to tell our manager why I think she deserves a title bump/promotion (from a job title I to a job title II). She is a really hard worker, really sharp, and deserves it 100%. I've thought of a few specific examples highlighting her strengths.
Two questions: 1) Should I answer the "opportunities for improvement" question honestly? The only things I could possibly think of is she snaps a bit when she is stressed, avoids confrontation (never tells me directly when she sees I've made a mistake, but tells our manager about it), and she generally lacks confidence even though everyone goes to her for answers to everything. She's been there two years and really knows our systems well. None of this is a big deal at all and I wouldn't want it to hold her back. But I don't know if this feedback would be valueable or just hindering, as confidence will come with time, most likely.
2) Anything I could say (or a way to say it) that will also have the benefit of making me look good to our boss? I would like a promotion someday too and always try to keep people's perception of me in mind. If I just say "my coworker is so amazing blah blah blah", does that make me look too easily impressed or something? Basically, is there a way to compliment my coworker to our boss that also makes me look more competent?
For what its worth, coworker, boss and I are all females. The office is 90% female which makes the social dynamics sometimes a bit hard to navigate.
Thanks for the advice!
