I'm currently working as a software engineer and applying to new jobs. I've had 2/4 companies that contacted me send me a link to a pre-screening coding test without saying another word.
One of these was a 2 hour test - which I simply passed on because I wasn't that interested in their low paying middle-of-nowhere job. The other I was interested in, but it was a 3 hour test.
These were both entry-level positions. For my current position, i received after a short pre-screening conversation, gave links to code samples, and about an 1.5 hour-long interview with discussion and whiteboard.
Are these normal in the industry? Should I just pass on the exceedingly long pre-screens like this? I'm not desperate to find a new job and not keen on spending a solid chunk of my evening after work doing these evaluations without even the dignity of a 'hello, we liked your resume' or even being told about the salary beforehand.
