Would it be inappropriate/negative impact to ask if employer would be willing to pay for additional training?
Context: I work at a nonprofit and interviewing tomorrow for a job doing development/grant writing. As it stands, it seems that I have the best chance of getting the position since I'm the only one at the org who has a background in writing/research and experience in fundraising, marketing, etc. As it stands, we do not have a grant writer and the one we had before actually did not get us any grants at all, so the bar is set pretty low. However, this also means that there isn't really anyone who can guide me on how to write grants at the organization. Though I have my BA in English and have taken a super introductory course on grant writing, I think it would be immensely beneficial to have additional training in grant writing since I don't have anyone to guide me on it. A nearby university offers a Certificate in Grant Writing for $750 that I would want to do (and have my org pay for).
Do you think that this would be a good question to bring up in the interview: would they be willing to invest in additional training? Or would this just highlight that I don't have enough experience to do the job?
