I am a Technical/Proposal writer living in the Washington, D.C. metro area. I am asking for $85K/yr to work on a Defense Department contract, which I previously supported between 2016 and 2018. I was making well below my market value (around $67K/yr), so I left to support an IT firm in suburban Maryland for better pay ($75K/yr). The Government client soon requested my return after my resignation due to my strong performance, but I declined since I had only worked at the IT firm for less than three months at that point. However, if the money is right, I'd gladly return to support the same team, especially since I recently saw an opening for a Communications Representative role at a different contracting firm that seemed geared to my skill set.
My information is as follows:
- Successful past performance supporting the Defense Department between 2016 to 2018; rated as a Tier I employee at last contractor
- Experience: Nearly 10 years (including 5 as a intel analyst, 5 as a freelance communications consultant)
- Education: Georgetown University (Master of Science in Foreign Service), Univ. of South Florida (B.A. in History)
- Security clearances: Secret (State Department), National Trust (Defense Department)
- Languages: Spanish (fluent), Portuguese (fluent), French (intermediate) - these languages are not critical to my role
Do you think my request for $85K/yr is realistic? The D.C. area is very expensive, and I'm very tired of living in the hood at this point.
For people not familiar with contract work, here's important information: As a contractor, I DO NOT work FOR the government, but rather for the contracting firm. I worked for the first contractor (which we can call Company A) from 2016-18 to serve the Government (which we will call "the Client"). Now, I am trying to work for a different contractor (Company B) to support the same "Client." Company B is a rival to Company A, serves the same Client. If Company B offers me a decent salary, I will work for them.
