Is it disrespectful to wear earphones while working in an office?

I work as a data entry clerk at a job. It’s not glamorous or stressful, but often at times I like to listen to podcasts in one ear while working.

However my supervisor told me I’m not allowed to wear one while at work. I’m new at this job and since my position doesn’t require me to actively speak to other coworkers, I like them to be able to cut them off and focus on my work.

Is it normal in offices to not be able to wear earphones at work? At my past jobs, this hasn’t been an issue before.
