Cover Letter for an Internship?

I am pursuing a Business Administration degree and I found an internship with PepsiCo that I am interested in and have started applying for (position titled: "Strategic Finance MBA Intern") but I'm not sure what a cover letter is, if I need one, and if so, what to include in one. I'm graduating from HS soon and any help is much appreciated. Thx!
