I think my degree on my resume might be keeping me from getting call-backs, interviews and offers

I am 35 years old and hold a degree in secondary education. For the past 10 years I've worked in sales in a couple of different positions (first as an independent sales agent, and for the past 5 years with the same large well-known company) I'm looking for what is next. I don't know that my current role is a complete dead-end, but in order to move up I'd likely need to relocate (not excited about because I have a family that is well planted into the community) or move on. I've been interviewing for a few positions at the company that I'm most excited to work for but I've yet to receive an offer, something always seems to happen. In one instance, they decided not to fulfill the role, in another instance I was overqualified and most recently the hiring manager left. I still haven't heard back about the most recent interview, but I'm guessing that if they are putting someone new in her position, they might not want someone green in the position just below her. Everyone at this company has given me such positive feedback on my skills, interviews and culture fit, but I can't seem to make it happen. I'm wondering about a few things that might help my chances;

1) Take a break. I've applied to so many positions at this company, at a certain point, is this hurting me instead of helping me? Am I coming across as desperate to get a job there? It's a large enough company that they have a ton of recruiters, but small enough that I've gotten to know one of them well because he has walked me back to 3 separate interviews. During the last one I told him that ultimately I'm looking for the best fit as much as they are.

2) Is my degree in education holding me back? I get the same question during every interview I've had. "I see that you have a degree in education, why aren't you teaching?" I always tell them the truth, which is; I taught for a year out of college, but it was far away from home. My wife and I wanted to start a family, but we wanted to be closer to home. During my job search when I was moving back home, I was offered an opportunity that sounded exciting and I've loved being in sales and business ever since. I've recently considered going back to school to get a business degree because all of the jobs that I am interested in have a requirement of having some sort of business degree. Some will say "Or related experience" but I get the sense that they'd rather see that business degree. If I do choose to go back to school, should I look into a second bachelors or a graduate program? My concern is that if I look into an MBA or the sorts, I will be pricing myself out of competition for the jobs I want.

I do work remotely right now, which is nice because it offers me flexibility and I don't have anyone looking over my shoulder. This winter I became Microsoft Office Specialist certified in Excel and have considered more small certifications like this, but haven't completed them yet.

Any thoughts and insight would be welcome. I do have an interview coming up next week with a different company than the one that I'd really like to work for. I'm keeping an open mind, but I've heard from friends that they are difficult to work for and don't offer much in the way of work/life balance. I do love reading posts from everyone here, especially those who post success stories. It keeps me motivated to keep trying!
