I said something on the phone to a potential employer and he seemed kind of off put. Am I overreacting?

So I applied for this job and I got a call a couple days later, we talked for a bit and he said they would let me know by the end of the week. Surprisingly I didn’t hear back for almost a month. He asks me if I’m still interested, I say yes. But then I say “so what happened? You picked other candidates over me and they didn’t work out? I’m the backup candidate?” I thought it was kind of funny, but the guy on the phone was silent and then said “uhh what?” I said “never mind” and there was an awkward silence and he said “so uhh are you interested in interviewing tomorrow?” I said yes and he said ok and quickly hung up.

Did I mess up there? I don’t think what I said is too bad and it’s probably what happened but the guy seemed to feel some type of way about it.
