First off, my background is in a much smaller sect of engineering that I don't want to specify exactly to stay anonymous.
So, Mid February I contacted a business owner, gave him my elevator spiel, asked to meet with him and got an appointment the next week. Key note: I said I was looking for an opportunity to work in the field, I didn't specifically say job. The company has just the one owner, no HR or anything like that.
We meet, I give him my resume, show him my work portfolio (I'm a recent grad) and am told that he could use some help, and described the job to me. We schedule another meeting to get a tour and go over technology I'd be using.
Unfortunately he travels a lot, so our next meeting which was supposed to happen the following week got postponed and I spent the next month playing a waiting game, sent an email or two, and finally called a couple times before we had our next appointment.
Our second meeting happened this week, where he told me what date my first "event" would be and was told to study the technology that another engineer would be sending me (I am so sorry for the vagueness).
Anyhow, this whole time there's been no mention of compensation, benefits, full time/part time/internship, etc. I know this is partly on me, but it's already been so hard trying to push him for the last month to meet me again. With the right pay, this would be a dream job for me, and is a really, really tough industry to get into.
So, my question is, how do I bring this up as naturally as possible? And how soon? I leave for my first event with them in a months time, and I said I'll be checking in with them shortly before then. Should I bring it up when I check in the week before? Do I discuss it with this other engineer sending me emails about the tech? Should I wait until after my first event? Should I ask to be paid this month while I spend time learning their software? I just want this to go as smoothly as possible. I'm not even 100% sure he understands I need to be paid.
tldr: How/when do I bring up my compensation for this new job I'm starting?
