I’m a baker and I work the 3 am tp 12 pm shift. Due to two different reasons, both of my coworkers are leaving at the same time. I just got a text from my boss stating that I need to get my food manager card ASAP. She doesn’t mention whether or not she’ll pay for it or if I’ll be getting a pay raise for it.
She hired me off the street, as in I haven’t gone to any schooling for this, she just taught me how to do the morning stuff (things like croissants, other bread doughs, etc.) Because of this, I’m making minimum wage. The plan is that eventually I’ll get a raise when I’m no longer training.
My question for you guys is how do I go about asking if I’ll be getting a pay increase for this new responsibility that’s being thrown on me? Do I deserve a pay raise because I need the more involved cert.? I won’t really be a manager, we just need someone with that certificate to be on site when there are workers in the bakery. I was gonna wait until I’ve been there a full year before I ask about a raise, but now I’m wondering if it’s ok for me to ask for one since she wants me to get this new certificate.
