I work as a govt subcontractor. I was laid off from one contract last month and started on a new contract with a different company immediately after. I’m salaried and both companies give 3 weeks PTO a year.
Prior to accepting the position at my current company, I let the director and the facility I work at know that I had a 2 week vacation planned to Europe next week which both said was fine. At the moment I have accrued 5 hours of PTO and instead of them giving me my years worth of PTO for this trip I would prefer to take it unpaid. I have already received the unused PTO pay for this trip from the company that laid me off and I also have another trip planned for the end of this year that I would need the vacation days from my current company for. Both trips have been planned and paid for prior to me getting laid off.
Do companies usually allow someone to take time off unpaid. How does the process go?
