Trying to land an out of state career job

I am applying to jobs in another state where the job market in my field is stronger and pays more (downside higher cost of living). However, I feel as thought having an out of state address deters employers from being interested. I don't want to list an in state address and have them think I'm close enough to do an interview. On top of that, I would still need to find a place to live if a company makes an offer and transport my car to that state (I'm not fresh out of college).

For those of you that we're able to successfully get a job in another state without having a local address, how did you do it? How did you get the edge over local competition? And how did you land a place to live before you started your new position? Thanks in advance.
