Referencing question

I applied for a job that requires three references. Two of these are no issue whatsoever but l left my previous employer in the lurch and quit due to the affect the toxic work environment was having on my mental health.. however I resigned over the phone and I know they weren't happy about it (unfortunately I can't go back in time.) One of my references has to be from my previous employer so I put them down. If they don't respond does anyone think I'll still get the job? Should I look elsewhere while the application is going through? Any advice welcome.
