Really need advice—working for a company that preys on financially ignorant folks

EDIT: when I say ignorant, I mean the neutral sense of the word—these folks just don’t know any better (I didn’t) because they’re fresh out of school/never have had to consider financials

Hi all,

I’ll get right to it—I’m working as an assistant to a wealth management advisor at a big name company. I handle his schedule and some of his marketing, plus general admin tasks. I started this job about 4 months ago, after a year of temping around various offices (I had had it with the contract life and no health insurance). I’m 23, and this is my first “career” job, complete with benefits, and a Simple IRA that’s available after a year. I make $44k. My life is not oriented toward insurance/finance, however—I work in the theatre (went to school for it), so really I’m open to any day job that will give me room to rent spaces and pay a couple of actors in the evenings.

Now, if you know anything about this particular company, and/or have read up on them in r/personalfinance, you’ll find that their “advisors” are glorified insurance salesman who sell overpriced and ill-fitting products to folks. Example—my boss has a client with FIVE WHOLE LIFE policies. This is costing this guy thousands a month, when he could easily get term for just himself (he has these policies taken out on his children for god’s sake—why do kids need life insurance??). I see these accounts and I feel so bad for these people who are duped simply because they don’t know any better/are manipulated by these “advisors.” Yet all around me coworkers either turn a blind eye or have drunk the koolaid and sing NM’s praises. I even feel like my boss has been duped by the company into believing that the products he sells are truly helping these folks. I admit, I should’ve researched them more, but the job offer was a godsend when it came. I’m coming to more and more each day, however...

So I ask—how damaging would it be to start to look for another job? Can some of my skills transfer if so? I’m licensed in Life and Health, and in a few months will have the Series 6 & 63 licenses. Maybe I stick around until I receive those, to give my resume a boost if seeking similar positions is possible? And like I said above, my day job is a day job, so as long as I can pay rent and give a couple of bucks to actors, I’ll do anything (most of my skills are office-based but I’m really open to whatever during the day). And also, sidenote...is there anything I can do to help these people who are getting legally robbed?

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
