The situation is I finished grad school last summer, and have been trying to break into a new field with no success. Now I'm probably going to take a job in my previous field, and then keep searching for jobs in the new field (where I have very little experience).
If I end up interviewing for a job in the new field after taking an interim job in my previous field, how can I tell a credible story? I feel like the initial impression any hiring manager would have is I couldn't break into the new field straight out of grad school, and had to "settle" for going back to essentially my old job. How can I spin a story to avoid this type of impression?

How would you spin a story about taking an interim job while wanting to break into a new industry?
