On January 29th, I accepted a job offer from an accounting firm. The offer was extended by email - after accepting, the next steps were as follows: Submit for a 3rd party background check, wait for an "official" job offer, pick a start date. I submitted the background check on the 29th. On the 31st, I received the job offer from them and sign it and submit it. After reading it, I see that it has a contingency upon a successful background check. I reach out to HR, who, in the same email as explaining that we just have to wait for the results to come back, asks to pick a start date - HR suggests February the 11th, the 18th. I ask for the 25th because.. well I wanted to put 2 weeks notice in at my current employer. I have emailed the potential future employer 3 times asking for an update and the response, of course, is it's a 3rd party company. All of my past employers told me they've been contacted last week. It's now been 10 business days and I still have no word back, and because of a few personal days I need off, I really need to take the entire week of the 18th off. This would mean giving only 1 weeks notice to my current employer.
To compound to this, I didn't stop applying at other jobs. I also have an offer, as of yesterday, for a lower paying position and they said I can start pretty much immediately. I don't even think that negotiating could get me to the salary range of the accounting firm, so I really don't want to accept unless, for some reason, the accounting firm decided to not hire me based on my background check which is unlikely but the delay is causing me a lot of anxiety. (I have no criminal history or bad work history, I don't embezzle, etc)
Why are companies offering jobs before actually completing a background check? I know full well I can't contact the accounting firm and ask for this to be sped up, as I've asked 3 times for the status - and I'm way too risk adverse to quit my job until I know without a shadow of a doubt I have another one.
