Confused about this potential internship offer

I applied to a data scientist position at a local start up about a month ago and I was asked if I was open to an internship instead. Given my absent relevant work experience (graduating math Ph.D) I thought it seemed like a good opportunity so I said yes.

The company had me do a technical phone interview, take-home code test, and an in-person interview. The in-person interview was last Thursday and I was told I would receive feedback this week.

On Tuesday I received an email from the head data scientist asking me how I felt about the interview (she wasn't one of the people doing the in-person technical interview). I responded that I felt it went well and was anticipating feedback some time this week. She told me that the feedback was positive and sent me a machine learning paper to read.

So basically I'm not sure how to proceed from here. I would like to know that I have an official offer, but it's unclear to me if this will happen. One of the data scientists interviewing me told me that the position was very open-ended and that I could be hired as a full-time within a week if they thought I was producing good work. I was wondering how I should interpret all of this. Should I contact the head data scientist and ask about an official offer? Or should I wait it out for another week or two?
