I'm looking for advice about the right way to discuss questions about bad managers at job interviews.
At my last job I had a manager, whom I will call David, that was bad at managing in general, but he specifically had a problem with deadlines. My team had a big but achievable deadline that came and went. Over the next three weeks my David's boss became more and more impatient at our seeming lack of progress and at David's seeming lack of care, so my co-workers and I decided to go behind his back and get the job done. Without going into too much detail, suffice it to say that the job was easier done manually rather than by the automated process that David had developed and on which he had staked his reputation. There were too many variables and not enough standardization to make his process viable.
I've had two job interviews in the past month, and the one I had yesterday I feel like I really flubbed this question. I wanted to talk about this episode as an example of how I was able to save the day despite poor leadership, but I am afraid I came off more as disrespectful of authority. I have another interview on Friday morning and I want to prepare for this question.
How would you handle this question?
