Is it okay to ask for a pay rise in my situation?

I work as a teacher and currently on $24 an hour (NZD) the average income for a teacher with my degree is around $21-22 an hour. However, there is currently a teacher shortage and teachers are in high demand here.

I’ve been at my place of work since April 2017. December that year I got a 50cent increase. Taking me from $23.50 to my current $24.

A lady who started in May 2017 got a pay rise of $1, because of her needing to meet the minimum pay requirement to stay in the country. So I understand the reason for her pay increase being more, however, I found that out in October 2017. Thinking I would get about the same in December the same year. I didn’t. I got the 50cents. Which bummed me out.

Last year, 2018, there were no pay rises.

I’m not out here to say I deserve more. Although what I’m about to say might say just that.

  1. I started a month before her
  2. We do the same job every day
  3. I go above and beyond with paper work. Work I’m not required to do, but do because I know no one else in my team has the ‘time’ to do it. Yet, I somehow always find time to do so. Paper work that I do; charts, lists, organising and planning trips and all the paperwork and legal forms to go with it, working on implementing things we say we should do... and lots of little things. When the head teacher (one in charge) is away I become the unofficial head teacher. No one says it, but every body knows I do.

I’ve never asked for a pay rise and kind of scared to do so in case the boss/owner who I rarely see thinks I don’t deserve it.

Is it fair of me to ask for a raise? How much should I ask for? How do I go about asking for one?
