I do well during phone interviews screenings but when we finally meet I can already tell I’ll be rejected.
I’m an African American. I grew up in a relatively wealthy family. I speak proper English and I think my white sounding name and my ability to speak eloquently has opened many doors that I assume would be have been closed had my situation been the opposite. I’ve noticed in the last 10 interviews that I’ve had, I always managed to build solid rapport with my interviewers, but when we finally get to meet I can feel an aura of disappointment in their faces because of the way I look. I’m not a light-skinned black, I look more like Terry Cruz. Is there anything I can do to put the recruiters at ease. I understand how my look could be associated with that of the stereotypical black gangster because if I see someone who looks like me I too would feel somewhat threatened. Any advice would help because this is seriously taking a toll on me.
