How to say no to a second chance?

Hi.

I live outside the USA, in a country which I love but job options here are quite limited, i.e. pay is awful and/or the working environment is wildly disorganized. I'm looking but I have an online job which I rely on when I can't find anything doable. So, I don't have to take the first thing that comes along.

I interviewed about a year ago at a place that seemed great (i.e. the only place here I've interviewed that seemed well-run and professional-development-oriented), but at the time didn't want to take a 50% pay cut to go there. I have since left my other job and have been looking again. I contacted them to see if they had anything open. They invited me to interview for a temporary position and want to hire me for it now.

The temporary aspect is fine with me. What isn't fine is the commute--- 2 hours each way. I knew it wasn't close to me but wasn't sure exactly how long it would take to get there because I go on public transit. So I went. I still think they are great, ie they talked a lot about how they would want to find something permanent for me and help pay for a really valuable industry certificaiion. But I also think a 4-hour commute will be awful and that for that reason all the great future stuff wouldn't be possible for me to do.

I feel like I will burn the bridge if I say no to the job because they invited me to interview in response to the email request I sent. Any advice for what to say to minimize the damage?

Thank you!
