i've been working in retail for about 6 years now. i don't mean to exaggerate or sound cocky, but i am an exceptional retail worker. i am extremely hardworking, i always come in and cover for people on days off, i am very respectful to authority. i know these things are very basic qualifications, but if you've worked in retail you've probably heard the saying "minimum wage minimum effort" which is how the majority of my coworkers perform. it's probably not a great habit, but i definitely allow myself to be taken advantage of at work. i will do tasks that are usually designated for higher paid employees just because i have a hard time saying no and really want to be seen as a team player.
i am very underappreciated at work and have been for my last 3 jobs. i have had a lot of issues with expressing interest in being promoted or asking for more hours/more responsibilities and the managers doing nothing. the problem is is with my last two jobs, my managers were absolutely SHOCKED when i said i was leaving simply because i found a better opportunity. i just received an offer for another part time job in addition to my current job (this job is kind of office administrative, which is an idea i've toyed with since i'm having trouble finding a job with my degree) and when i informed my manager today, they were very upset.
i understand why my managers would be upset since i am a great employee. but at the same time i don't know what to do different. i've pretty explicitly asked my managers for certain things and given them time to help me out, but they never do. my last job only offered to promote me when i was putting in my two weeks in order to get me to stay.
also, i don't think i should have to straight up tell my manager "hey i think i should be promoted" or "hey i deserve more pay" because shouldn't that be the manager's responsibility? shouldn't they be able to acknowledge my hard work and then when i say things like "yeah i'm having a hard time paying my bills, i'm probably going to need to get a second job" or "definitely feel free to schedule me x hours, i am available and always willing to work" offer to do things? their reaction when i say i'm getting another job/quitting tells me that they obviously know that i'm a good employee, but shouldn't they be actively trying to do things for me in order to get me to stay if they really want me to exclusively work there?
i really do not like upsetting my managers. is there really anything else i can do? is this just a side effect of retail?
