The one constant trait for every job I've worked has been a sort of contagious jadedness in the workplace. People are frustrated about their co-workers, about a system that isn't efficient or smart enough, about some part of management, or about money. For my co-workers, much of the day is spent complaining and whispering and sighing and shrugging shoulders or, on bad days, huffing and puffing. I don't like gossip or complaining, and I try not to take part in it. I WANT to enjoy my job. But I start to get bored and frustrated too, partly for some of the same reasons everyone else is upset and partly because bad moods are contagious. For context, I've worked as an RA in my college dorm , an intern and assistant in offices doing administrative tasks/answering questions, a bookseller at a local bookstore, and a book publishing assistant. I've worked in two different cities.
My question is this: Is there some way to escape this trend? Where do I need to go to find people who like their jobs most of the time? What is your experience, and where have you found the most meaning in your work life?
