Explaining a 2+ Year Mental Health-Related Employment Gap to Potential Employers

Hi all.

I realize that employment gaps are not all that uncommon, and that some accepted protocols exist to explain them away. Unfortunately, I'm unfamiliar with such protocols when the reasons for a gap in employment are due to an extended break from work to directly address mental health issues.

Thankfully, I'm doing better, and I now feel capable of managing a job.

I want to believe that most employers would look highly on such recovery efforts, but I am not that naive: even if the employer sympathized with my reasons, the fact is that my work-related skills have been latent for over two years, and I've accumulated no relevant work experience in just as long. Besides this, the work experience I've had before this gap is quite limited (few positions were held for more than 4 months, mainly due to completing grad school).

Anyway, I'd love to hear from anyone who might be able to relate. If nothing else, you can tell me just how hard it's going to be explain this without raising "mental health flags" to a potential employer.
