I had my interview for what is pretty much my dream job on 17 December. It went pretty well, they told me they liked my skillset, and asked about when I could start. Salary was also briefly mentioned.
After the interview I was told that there were a lot of candidates and they'd only be able to come to a decision by "end december or early january" at the earliest. That evening I sent a simple thank you email to the interviewers expressing that I was thankful for their time and that I'd be happy to provide more work samples or to answer any further questions. I also sent an email to the HR person to thank her for her time. Since then it's been radio silence on their end.
It's 10 January as I type this and I'm not sure if I should send a follow up email to enquire about how far along they are in the hiring process and to reiterate my interest.
Is it still considered 'early January'? Should I give them a bit more leeway because of the year-end period where everything tends to grind to a halt, and they did mention they had a lot of candidates to go through?
If I do email them, would it be better to email HR or to email the interviewers/hiring managers?
Additional information fwiw - I'm not a stranger to the hiring managers as I'd interned at the company before during college. The interview felt friendly and casual. I was referred to the role by one of the existing members of the team who also wrote me a nice recommendation. I also understand from him that the bosses hope to fill the role quickly.
