Any advice from people who've had a similar issue?
Was in my most recent job for years, was a loyal employee, had a decent relationship with management. Left after we had a major disagreement (both of us convinced we're correct, although I have tried to see it from their perspective.) We haven't spoken since.
(I'm keeping the details of the nature of work and of the disagreement deliberately vague, so please don't ask.)
I am looking for a job and am finding how to navigate this aspect very daunting. Sure, it looks good that I was in the position for such a while but I don't know how to explain why I left or why I don't have a reference, short of just being classily honest: "unfortunately we had a confrontation and I decided I couldn't return".
Currently what I'm doing is building up volunteer experience so that I have current references. But yeah, the issue is an intimidating one.
(ETA asking current/former employees probably not an option.)
