Traditional Career vs Sales... what would you choose?

Posting this on a burner.

I'm looking for some anecdotal advice... If you guys were at a crossroads at your life and you had an option of doing a what you think would be a very interesting job (a good fit) vs a job that will make you a lot of money but you've had limited exposure to, what direction do you think you'd take?

I am currently at that crossroad. I'm in my early 30s and I have an opportunity to become a police officer in a very well paying department (NJ) but it will take 5+ years to see any serious money. Benefits are job security and a solid pension after 20 years of service. I've also been in the military for ten so I have the potential to draw to pensions if I stay in. On the other hand I have an opportunity to jump into medical sales which can be very lucrative but I've never been in a direct selling role. I work with sales reps now and I demonstrate many of the skills needed but still I have never done outside sales as a career before. I'm apprehensive but excited about both opportunities. I almost see one as a safe play and the other one as a risk. What have some of you guys done in your situations?
