Started new job in middle of October, just got a letter saying they are garnishing wages for missed healthcare payments...

Hi there, I’m just wondering if this is on the up and up. I’m located in the US.

I started my new job with an entity of city government. When I started they said I couldn’t sign up for healthcare for two weeks because I wouldn’t be in the system. Fair enough. I had 45 days to sign up so it was no problem. Got signed up at the end of November and they started deducting the amount for it. Great.

Well, today I get a letter that says they are taking an extra payment of healthcare benefits from my next two checks (so essentially doubling the amount coming out of my next two checks for healthcare) because I failed to pay for healthcare for my first two checks. But I didn’t have any healthcare those first two checks, and further more couldn’t sign up for healthcare for the first one given my name wasn’t in the system for two weeks.

I feel like this is, in a word, bullshit. However, probably completely legal, bureaucratic bullshit. Has anybody come into this situation or know about this? Any HR on here that can help me out? The fact that this is occurring at Christmas time is also a kick in the face.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you!
